Hormone Refractory or Castration Resistant, Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer:
Hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC) and androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC) are terms that are often used interchangeably to describe prostate cancer that continues to grow after hormone therapy:
Explanation
Prostate cancer is considered hormone-refractory or androgen-independent when it continues to grow despite initial hormone therapy, such as surgical castration or chemical castration. The preferred term for this condition is castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
Symptoms
The first sign of hormone-refractory or androgen-independent prostate cancer is usually a rising PSA level.
Treatment
Standard treatment for hormone-refractory or androgen-independent prostate cancer includes continued castration with LHRH agonists in combination with docetaxel-containing chemotherapy. Other treatment options include hormones, chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopes or radiotherapy, and bisphosphonates.
Prognosis
The median survival for patients with hormone-refractory or androgen-independent prostate cancer is between 10 and 20 months.
