Atopic Dermatitis (AD):
Atopic dermatitis (AD), also known as eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes intense itching and recurrent eczematous lesions. It affects the skin on the face, neck, arms, and legs, and is usually worse in some periods called flares and better in others called remissions.
Incidence and prevalence
In developed countries, AD affects 10–30% of children and 2–10% of adults. The prevalence of AD has increased two to three-fold in recent decades.
Etiology
The exact cause of AD is unknown, but it's likely a combination of genetic, immune, and environmental factors. AD is often associated with elevated levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) and may be linked to other atopic diseases like asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Onset
AD usually begins in early infancy, but it can also affect adults. There are three subsets of AD based on age of onset: early-onset, late-onset, and senile onset.
Risk factors
AD is associated with a higher risk of food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.
Prevention
Prevention strategies include applying emollients, avoiding soap, infant feeding, modulating the gut flora, and dietary supplementation.
