Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: 
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a fatal, progressive, and incurable disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

• Incidence
  The incidence of ALS is the number of new cases per 100,000 people per year, and is estimated to be between 1 and 2.6 cases per 100,000. However, the incidence varies by location, ranging from 0.26 per 100,000 person-years in Ecuador to 23.46 per 100,000 person-years in Japan. 
• Prevalence
  The prevalence of ALS is the number of cases per 100,000 people, and is estimated to be around 6 cases per 100,000. The prevalence also varies by location, ranging from 1.57 per 100,000 in Iran to 11.80 per 100,000 in the United States. 
• Etiology
  ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The majority of cases are sporadic, meaning they are not hereditary, but the remaining 5-10% are familial, meaning they are hereditary. Mutations in the SOD1 gene are found in 10–20% of familial ALS cases and 1%–5% of sporadic ALS cases. 
• Treatments
  ALS is incurable, but treatments can extend the length and quality of life for patients. Treatments include Riluzole, Edaravone, Tofersen, Noninvasive ventilation (NIV), Mechanical insufflation/exsufflation, Creatine and high-dose vitamin E, and Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for depression.
